Central Coast Law Enforcement Agencies Collaborate To Investigate Threat Towards Schools

PASO ROBLES – On Friday, September 15, 2023, the Paso Robles Police Department was advised of a possible school threat. The school threat was shared on social media throughout the Central Coast and does not specifically mention Paso Robles. The Paso Robles Police Department is working with other law enforcement agencies to determine the origin of the posting.

The Paso Robles Police Department would like to remind our community to please immediately contact law enforcement for any threat of violence directed towards any person or school. Further reposting of content of this nature is incredibly harmful and makes finding the origin of the message more challenging.

Paso Robles Police officers will continue to monitor our schools with police presence and will continue to determine the credibility of the threat.

Paso Robles Police Respond To Serious Injury Traffic Collisions

PASO ROBLES, CA – Paso Robles Police Department Traffic Division responded for two separate serious injury traffic collisions within a 24 hour period.

On Saturday September 9th, 2023 at approximately 12:30 a.m, PRPD dispatch received a call of a man down in the area of Buena Vista Drive and River Oaks Drive. When Officers arrived on scene it was determined to be a traffic collision which involved an E-Bike. The rider was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. Alcohol appears to be a factor in this collision.

Shortly after at approximately 7:13 a.m, PRPD Dispatch received a call of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision in the area of 1st Street and Oak Street. Initial responding Officers located all involved parties on scene. PREMS responded for a female which sustained serious injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. The female pedestrian was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this collision

The Paso Robles Police Department wants to remind everyone we all have places to be and not everyone gets there by car. Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles have. We should all be looking out for one another.

Temporary Closures of North River Road in Paso Robles to Begin September 18.

PASO ROBLES, CA, Wednesday, September 6, 2023 – The City of Paso Robles has contracted with Mountain Cascade Inc. to install a large recycled water pipeline under the Salinas River, in North River Road, and up a hillside above North River Road. This pipeline will deliver a new source of irrigation water to east Paso Robles and help solve the problem of declining groundwater levels in the Paso Robles Groundwater Basin.

In order to safely install the pipeline in the narrow roadway and up the hillside, the contractor must temporarily close North River Road, just north of River Oaks Drive, beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, September 18. The road will be closed at all times on weekdays, for two weeks. The road will be opened for the weekend days, starting at 6 p.m. on Friday. In addition to this hard closure, North River Road will be closed during daytime hours only (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) from October 2 to October 13 (Monday – Friday).

The City and its contractor have taken all measures to minimize the length of these road closures.

During these closures, residents and businesses that normally use North River Road to access areas north of City limits must take a detour to Airport Road and Wellsona Road.

Signs showing the detour route will be posted.

Paso Robles Police Investigate Shooting Late Saturday Night

PASO ROBLES – Shortly before midnight on 09/02/2023, a Paso Robles police officer heard the sounds of gunfire in the 700 Block of 28th Street. The officer then noticed at least two males, dressed in back, running from the area. Officers searched for the two subjects, but they were not located.

As Paso Robles police officers and detectives started to investigate the scene, we learned about 7 shots were fired at an apartment complex in the 700 Block of 28th Street. Although the apartment was struck several times, fortunately, nobody was injured. Detectives worked throughout the night collecting evidence and following leads. At this time, this appears to be a targeted event.

Paso Robles Police Respond To Residential Burglary In Progress.

PASO ROBLES- On Thursday, August 31, 2023, at approximately 1030 hours, the Paso Robles Police Department received a report of a residential burglary in progress on Silverwood Way. The owner received notification via his surveillance cameras that three unknown subjects had entered his residence. Officers arrived and with the help from the Atascadero Police Department K9, searched the residence. The suspects had fled prior to officers’ arrival and the loss is still under investigation.

On August 28th, 2023, PRPD took a similar case where three suspects entered a residence and stole an undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry.

Paso Robles Police Investigate Threat at Lewis Middle School.

PASO ROBLES, CA- During the afternoon of August 31″, 2023, PRPD Officers were notified by Daniel Lewis Middle School staff of a student’s social media post regarding a potential incident. The Paso Robles Police Department quickly responded and conducted a thorough investigation and it was determined there were no credible threats.

There was no impact on student safety or the school site. The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District also took administrative actions per their policy. The Paso Robles Police Department and the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District are committed to the safety and wellbeing of all within our community.

Paso Robles Police Department Hold DUI Checkpoint August 19, 2023

Paso Robles, Calif. – On 08/19/2023, the Paso Robles Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. at an undisclosed location.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Commander Afana said.

“Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

Paso Robles Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Paso Robles Mayor Steve W. Martin Passes Away.

The City of Paso Robles is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mayor Steve W. Martin. Mayor Martin passed away on 08/14/2023 after a hard-fought illness. Mayor Martin’s passing leaves a void throughout the community, as he leaves behind a legacy of over two decades of tireless public service and unwavering commitment to the betterment of Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo County.

Steve Martin served as Mayor of Paso Robles having first being elected to that position in 2014. He was again elected to the City Council in 2012 as a Councilmember. He was elected as Mayor in 2018, and again for a third term in November 2022, which would have run through 2026. He also previously served on the Paso Robles City Council from 1987 to 1996 and was selected by his peers to be Mayor of Paso Robles from 1988 to 1990. Mayor Martin was a life-long resident of the North County, growing up in Atascadero and living in Paso Robles from 1973 until his passing.

“Steve was a trusted colleague, a good friend, a thoughtful leader, and the ultimate public servant,” said Paso Robles Mayor Pro tempore John Hamon. “It has been an honor to serve with him these many years.

His passing is a great loss for the City Council, our community, and most especially his family. Our prayers are with his wife Jennifer, daughters, grandchildren, and extended family.”

Mayor Martin’s visionary approach and dedication to the community’s welfare earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues, constituents, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him. During his time on the City Council and as Mayor, Mayor Martin was a strong advocate for economic development and quality of life in Paso Robles. He was instrumental in the development of the City’s downtown area and the creation of the Paso Robles Wine Festival. He was also a strong supporter of the City’s schools and parks.

“Mayor Martin’s impact extended far beyond his role in local government. He was deeply involved in numerous civic organizations and philanthropic efforts, always striving to uplift the less fortunate and address social challenges. His compassion and dedication to public service made a lasting difference in the lives of countless individuals, leaving an indelible mark on the fabric of our community,” said City Manager Ty Lewis.

Outside of elected office and his numerous volunteer efforts, Mayor Martin was a marketing professional with more than 30 years of experience in communications including corporate communications, radio, television, newspaper, publishing, internet design, and public relations.

Details regarding a public memorial service will be provided as they become available. Family representatives have informed the City they are planning a public remembrance of life event to be held sometime within the next 30-days.

The Mayor Pro tempore will assume the powers and duties of the mayor until such time as the role of the mayor is filled. Discussion on filling the role of mayor will occur at a future City Council meeting, date to be determined.

Two Juveniles Arrested For Vandalism At Paso Robles High School.

PASO ROBLES, CA – On 08/10/2023, shortly after midnight, PRPD Dispatch received an alarm call at the Paso Robles High School, located at 801 Niblick Rd. Officers received information of alarm activations in multiple rooms throughout the campus. As officers arrived, they located a group of juveniles who began running from one of the classrooms which had an alarm activated. Two of the juveniles were detained. One of the juveniles was in possession of a large hammer and a fire extinguisher. During the officers’ investigation, they discovered multiple classrooms with broken windows and damaged property scattered across the campus. The damage to the school property was estimated to be approximately $30,000.00.

Both juveniles were booked into the San Luis Juvenile Services Center for 459PC, 594PC.

Paso Robles Police Make Grand Theft Arrest.

PASO ROBLES, CA – On 07/17/23 at about 09:00 a.m., officers from the Paso Robles Police Department responded to Lowes, 2445 Golden Hill Road, on a report of a grand theft suspect (Kody Samuels, 36, of Santa Maria) who had returned to the store. During this investigation it was determined Samuels had come to the Lowes store on a prior date, 6/30/23, and had stolen a log splitter, after cutting the cable that secured it to the business. On 7/17/23 he had returned to the store and attempted to cut a cable which held several generators together, presumably to steal the generators as well.

Samuels concealed numerous pieces of store merchandise in his clothing and fled from the business on foot, but the responding patrol officers located him nearby and arrested him without incident. Samuels was transported to the San Luis Obispo County Jail and booked into custody on charges of grand theft, burglary, possession of burglary tools, possession of stolen / fictitious checks and possession of a stun gun by a prohibited person.
